Question

Why does the "Create" field access right only apply to documents and not folders?

asked on May 7, 2015 Show version history

I see that the create right only applies to documents. What is the reasoning behind this limitation? I was hoping to use this right on a folder but am now stymied in that effort...

The Create field specifically means that you can set the field on initial entry creation, when the metadata dialog comes up. Once the document is saved, it no longer applies.

Currently folders don't provide the option to set metadata on creation, so there's never a chance to do this. We've discussed the possibility of adding that option for Folders, so it's something we might be able to add in the future.

All that said, what are you trying to do with create rights here? There might be another approach we could suggest.

Hi Barry,

Metadata field rights should not behave any differently based on the entry the metadata is associated with. If a user is denied the "Create" field access right then regardless of the user trying to assign that metadata to a document or a folder, the user should not be able to do so.

If you are seeing something different, then I would suggest contacting your Laserfiche reseller to open a support case.

I just wanted to limit editing a particular field on a folder to the point at which the template was initially selected. It's intended to override the value that a workflow would supply by default.  It's a fairly infrequent use case, so I've decided to expand the rights to Edit for a certain group only, and that should work out OK.

In my example, I would not want to be prompted each time a folder is created just to get this feature. I would want the create right to take effect the first time the template was applied, even if that was different from the folder creation date.
