Question

Directory Server on Windows 2008 Enterprise Server

asked on May 6, 2015

Hi.

We are working on a Rio upgrade from version 8.3.1 to version 9.2 in the client's UAT environment and have run into a couple of hiccups with Directory Server. The client's IT department has created a self-signed certificate to use with DS. When attempting to launch DS the web page displays a message "There is a problem with this website's security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address." There is the option to close the web page or continue. Upon continuing, another error shows up "Server Error in '/LFDS' Application. The resource cannot be found." It is looking for /LFDS/Views/Home/index.cshtml. We checked and this file exists but it has nothing in it.

The OS is Windows 2008 Enterprise Server (not R2). The minimum browser requirement for DS seems to be IE10. The version of IE which was installed on this server was version 8 and when we upgraded we could only go to IE9. According to the Microsoft download site IE9 is the current version for Server 2008. This would seem to indicate that in order to go to IE10 or later we would first need to do a server OS upgrade which drastically changes the scope of the project.

Has anyone used Directory Server in an environment similar to the one I have outlined above? Could the error messages be a result of the version of IE or the result of an improperly configured certificate?

The client contact has placed a request with the IT department for a more formal corporate signed SSL certificate so we will be changing certificates to see if that makes a difference but I wanted to check in the meantime to see if the versions of OS and IE are the show stoppers.

We removed DS and reinstalled License Manager 8.3 and we were able to upgrade all the other Laserfiche components without any difficulties. The preference of course is to have everything including License Manager upgraded so moving ahead with LM instead of DS isn't really a final solution.

Hopefully all of that makes sense!!

Thank you,

Rob

You don't have to be on the server to use the Directory Server's administration site (your domain user needs to either be a local admin on the LFDS server or part of the Laserfiche Directory Service Administrators local group), so you can try a browser from a remote machine.

That said, there's nothing wrong with sticking with the 8.3 License Manager. Laserfiche 9.2 will work fine with License Manager instead of LFDS.

IE9 is not supported. You could use a different browser, like Firefox or Chrome if IE10 is not an option.

The certificate error is expected if it was generated for the machine using its fully qualified name (machine.domain.com) but you're trying to access the site either as localhost or just using the machine name in the URL. Ignoring the certificate validation should allow you to proceed, but the page is not expected to load in IE9.

Hi, Miruna

Thank you for the quick reply! I don't believe the corporate policy will allow the use of browsers other than IE and they may not be in a position to do an OS upgrade to a version which is compatible with IE10 in the immediate future. Do you foresee any problems if we stick with License Manager for the upgrade to 9.2 until they can upgrade the OS and IE? Once the OS and IE have been upgraded we could then move to Directory Server.

Thank you,

Rob
