Question

VM server not visible to License Server 8.3.1

asked on May 5, 2015

I am trying to generate a license for workflow 8.0 to be installed on a VM server (VMware 5) but the Laserfiche License Manager 8.3.1 is not able to access the VM server. "The computer could not be found" error is generated. Please advise as to what configuration we need to apply so that the License Manager can access the VM. I am a local administrator on the VM and on the host server of the License Manager.

Does the license manager server have permissions to the VM server?

Hi Derek,

How do we grant the license manager server permissions to the VM server?

Is there a reason why you're sticking with Workflow 8.0 instead of using a newer version (which, among other performance enhancements and fixes, does not require licensing for Rio environments)?

Miruna, we are planning to upgrade to WF 9 in a few months. In the meantime, we need to move our WF from a Window 2003  server into a VM server. The license server issue not connecting to VMs is also affecting our new LF server which will be installed on another VM server.

Under services, the login will need to be a user that has permissions across the network to that server. Sounds like the license manager service may be under local admin.

Derek, the license manager service account is a local admin on the VM server and on the license manager server.

What you have  to look at on this is that even though the two servers are on the same VM server, they work like separate servers. Each workstation on the VM server is its own server when it comes to permissions. So what I would do is change the License Manager Service to a domain account that has access to both servers.

The License Manager Service is running on a physical server with a domain service account that is an admin on the physical server and on the VM that will be host to the workflow server.

Are you able to ping the workflow server from the license manager server?

Yes, I am able to ping the VM server from the license manager server.

Do you get any error messages in the event viewer when you try to connect?

The event logs do not indicate any error.

Let me step back a moment, When you get this message you are trying to generate the license for the Workflow server correct? Now that I think about it I have seen this before. Run the Show Hardware Fingerprint application. You can find  this where your Laserfiche server is installed. Copy the application (Showhwfp) over to the server that you are trying to generate the license for. Below is a screen shot of it. Run it on the workflow server. Take the information and from there you can generate a license with license manager by manually inputting the information. Once it generates the license file, you can copy the license file over to the workflow server. I don't have screen shots of manually entering the information as I am on Avante. I have worked with several RIO installations before and every now and then had this issue occur.

In my example, it shows D drive, that is just where my Laserfiche happens to be installed. Yours my be on the C drive.

Thank you for this workaround Derek. This will help us to move forward with the installations.
