Question

Making the "from" field dynamic in Forms

asked on April 30, 2015

One of our customers has a Forms process where an email activity will send an email to someone outside the organization. Their requirement is that they want the submitter to be notified if the email bounces back.

My first thought was to make Forms send the emails from the initiator's email address so that they receive the bounce-backs directly in their own inbox, but it looks like the From field is always hard-coded.

How can Forms fulfill this requirement?

Hi there,

Thank you for your use case. We'll look into this.

Impersonating other users is not something most mail servers allow by default. You would have to set up each mailbox to allow sending email by a different user on its behalf.

Yes, I understand. I guess how the feature is implemented ultimately doesn't matter, as long as it accomplishes the end goal of notifying someone when the email bounces. I've developed a few web apps that receive and parse incoming emails to check for specific keywords (i.e. "bounce" or "reject") so that might be another way of going about it. Forms already has that capability with direct approvals, so... :)
