Enhancement Request: Combine Basic and Standard scan modes

asked on April 29, 2015

After getting some practice at configuring scanning I want like to throw my two cents out there that I find the implementation of Basic and Standard scan modes to be an obstacle to ease of use. IMHO the differences are minor compared to the nuisance of dealing with two modes.

I would request to make the functions of Basic mode available as options under the  "File / Options / General" category (such as: exit after store). For the Option categories that are missing from the Basic options menu, just group them under a new category called "Advanced", if you must. The two interfaces are different animals, but only just slightly enough to make it aggravating to compare them to find out what you gain and lose by switching.  If you have one interface then the whole issue of prompting users to choose the mode, and subsequently going through the routine of re-enabling the prompt after it's been disabled would disappear.  I also don't see the image enhancement configuration of Standard mode to be any more daunting than in Basic mode (however I find the Basic implementation much more straightforward). In short, I find things I like about both modes, so I don't see why they must be mutually exclusive.  Just my thoughts :-)

Thanks, that helps.

In Basic Mode, if you just click New Document after scanning the first one, Scanning will send the first one and and keep the window open so the user can scan the next one.

In Standard Mode, why not just type the folder you want to create in the folder path? Sending the document will create the folder (assuming the user has the rights to do so, which it sounds like they would from your description).

They have different target audiences as user studies have found Standard Mode to be a bit too complicated for the case where users scan a single document and they do so fairly infrequently. The idea was that the user would pick one and stick with with depending on their scanning needs. Basic Mode is tailored to the infrequent, low volume scanning case.

What do you find useful in Basic Mode that you miss in Standard Mode? How about the other way around? Why do you find yourself switching between them?

Miruna,

We don't have a final process in place so when I say we're switching around it's only to compare one version with the other. The two versions are dissimilar enough that it's not intuitive what you are gaining and losing until you sit down and road test both of them, which is really my main frustration - it's like testing two different products to find a solution.

Here is one use case we're debating:

We have a scan process that requires the user to create a folder, select it, launch Scan (in standard mode), and scan into that folder. When you first launch scan, the selected folder is automatically the target. But when you create and select folder number two and scan, the original folder is still the target, and the users find having to repoint to the new folder using Scan to be kind of tedious (it starts from the root every time and click, click, click down to where you have to be - if it started from where you left off it would be nice).

If we use Basic mode, since Scan exits automatically after storing, when they create and select the new folder they have to relaunch Scan and the target is correct. In our case we scan two documents into the same folder every time, so what would work better is have an option to quit after x documents. Or better yet have a Refresh button in Scan that updates the target folder to the currently selected folder in the client, then Standard mode would be fine.
