Word documents under version control functionality - files opening as read-only

asked on April 23, 2015

I just want to confirm some thing about version control.

When I put a document under version control I can see the various versions on the metadata tab.  If I open any of the versions from the metadata tab I noticed the document always opens Read-Only and if I make changes and close the document I get prompted to save and things getting confusing.

Is the function of opening the document as Read-Only by design?  So I should be instructing users to never open a document they want to edit from the version pane and always double-click the document in the Browser window if I want to edit it.  Correct?

Thanks

Sandy

That's correct. Please see this help page. It states

Versions opened from the version history are read-only and cannot be modified. To modify the latest version, you can open it from the folder browser and make your changes.
