A case was filed and closed for inactivity. Initial investigation suggested the issue may be caused by the large number of records in the external table. The suggestion made in the case was to set the following user attributes: "[Settings]CacheFieldValues" to "Yes" (without the quotes) to keep the list from trying to load the entire record set every time it is opened and "[Settings]MaxDropDownLength" to a reasonanble number.
