I was also hoping you could provide more details about your use case, especially why you're looking for this feature. Do the file types (tif vs. electronic document) contain different information? Does only one file type work as you'd like it to?

Regarding pros and cons, it's good to be mindful of security. Just because the user is seeing the tiff version doesn't necessarily mean he can't export the PDF. So, if you're looking to restrict access to electronic documents, then you'll likely need to turn to access rights.
