Quick Fields - Does Auto-OMR need enclosed bubbles to function?

Quick Fields 9.0.0.427 - Trying to get Auto-OMR to function with check mark areas that are not enclosed, I keep getting a No regions found error...does this feature only work with enclosed bubbles?

As long as it's a connected all the way around, it will work.

What are the specific requirements?  Is it just that it needs board all around so box, circle, octigon, triangle, etc. will all work?
