Question

Third Party OCR and Translation Software??

asked on March 26, 2015

Couple of questions....can Laserfiche utilize a third party OCR engine?  If so, how?  Second, does anyone know of any translation software that can be utilized with Laserfiche.  In other words, document is in the Asian language, needs to be OCR'd, and then translated to the English language so end user can read.  If anyone has any ideas or experience with either of the above, can you assist me in finding a solution for a customer?

Thanks!

There is only 1 3rd party OCR that I am aware of and it is for Arabic, though I am not sure where you would find information about it.

I have not heard of anyone producing a translation integration, but it should not be to difficult with the SDK.  If you do an internet search for language translation sdk, you will get a lot of hits that will provide tooks to add translation to your integrations.  The Microsoft Translator is free up to 2 million characters per month with a subscription fee for more then that.

Hi Bert,

Would you to give us more details about this OCR for Arabic ?

The OCR engine that ships with Laserfiche 9.2 supports a number of Asian languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and Indonesian. Some Asian languages that are not supported include the Indic languages (e.g., Hindi, Bengali, Tamil), Persian, Arabic, and Thai. As Bert mentioned above, BMB Sal, our VAR and distributor for the Middle East region has developed an integration with an Arabic OCR engine. You can contact BMB for details if you're interested. In theory the same approach could be used to integrate support for an OCR engine which supports other language families, but I'm not aware of any other integrations.

I'm not aware of any integrations between Laserfiche and translation software.

They are using the OCR engine in different languages, however, they're not happy with the quality of the OCR and are exploring 3rd party options...so that's why I was curious as to how to use a 3rd party OCR option with Laserfiche.  The translation piece is kinda of a separate issue.  Thanks!
