Renaming volumes

I am in the process of recreating our naming convention for our volumes can you tell me if I change the name of the current volume I have what effect if any will that have on the documents already in that volume

The documents in that volume won't be affected in any way. The volume name in this instance can be thought of like a label. Instead of the documents being in "Volume A" they'll be in "Volume B" or however you are renaming the volume.
