Question

Question

WebLink Licensing

asked on March 17, 2015

Here is the Web Link scenario I am going to be dealing with:

VMPWEB3 Server is currently running Web Link 8.0.2

VMPWEB4 Server will be the replacement server, and we will install Web Link 8.2.2 on it.

Will we be able to install Web Link 8.2.2 on VMPWEB4 and keep Web Link 8.0.2 operating/functioning on VMPWEB3 until we retire VMPWEB3?

Our fear is ‘breaking’ Web Link on VMPWEB3 before we can transition to VMPWEB4.

Thank you for your time.

Laserfiche allows for an unlimited number of WebLink instances, even in Team/United systems.

While not directly related to this question, but to address Chris' mentioning of Public Portal, Public Portal is licensed per Laserfiche Server instance. For unlimited Public Portal (which is dependent on CPUs) it counts the CPUs of the Laserfiche Server computer and not the web server where WebLink is installed.

Hello Alexander ,

Weblink Unlimited Public Portal license for Rio also depends on Number of CPUs ?

Thank You.

Not since the change in how Portals are licensed which came into affect in 2017 as original post above is from 2015.

Hi Jerry,

I'm assuming you are running Laserfiche Rio? If that's the case then you can generate as many web link licenses as you want however, you can only have 1 actual 'real' web link server. When generating the license through License Manager you need to select the public portals tab. You can only generate this if you have a license. Don't forget the CPU's on the new server have to match what you are licensed for (make it the same as the old one and you can't go wrong).

The other catch, only named users can log into the subsequent web link servers. Named users and read-only users log into the real one.

Hope this helps (I don't feel I've explained this all very well.)

Thanks for the quick response.  This is actually a United system with a weblink license file and not an activation key for weblink.  I have never tried to install weblink on  more than one server and have it work without cancelling each other out by a licensing issue.  It is only a temporary situation but wanted to offset any issues ahead of time.

Ah! If you are using United then yes, you will only be able to have one weblink server at a time.

Sorry yes. LF Server not WebLink server. blush Thanks Alexander!

Didn't realize you could have multiple web link servers with United. Does the same apply for Avante? And also when it comes to United, how do you allocate the license to the 'real' web link server? I've only installed web link under Rio.

Yes, this also applies to Avante.

WebLink 8.x didn't use activation, but rather the legacy license file (lf.lic) that's downloaded from the Support Site. You'd just install however many number of WebLink instances you want using that license file.

WebLink 9 has switched to activation, but there's no practical limit to the number of activations available.

In Rio, you can register however many number of WebLink instances you want. WebLink 8 can read .licx files from Rio.

Thanks Alexander, I'm a little confused by this. So you can purchase web link 8 once and install it as many times as you like with no restrictions? I know the limitations in Rio is you can only have 1 instance with the public portal license allocated. Seems this doesn't apply in Avante?

The WebLink product itself can be installed as many times as you want. Public Portal is a user license type that dictates the number of read-only, non named user connections that come through WebLink at any given time.

Ah! Okay. Now I understand. Thanks for the explanation Alexander.

So what Jerry needs to do, is install Web Link on the new server, set everything up and when he's ready swap the Public Portal License over. Cool beans. yes
