Question

Object reference not set to an instance of an object

asked on March 12, 2015

I'm trying to activate my Laserfiche Client (Avante MS SQL Server). It is version 8.2.0.605.

I entered my activation key and hit the Validate Key button, it returned an error saying, "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. ... Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just-in-time (JIT) debugging, the .config file for this
application or computer (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.

For example:

<configuration>
    <system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>

When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the computer
rather than be handled by this dialog box.

This sounds like a potential support case. Have you tried contacting your re-seller for assistance?

We don't have a re-seller. What is Laserfiche's Support phone number, by the way?

Eric,

To confirm, you are manually activating by using the activation tool? If so, please try downloading the activation tool from KB 1012301. The KB is regarding how to do a manual deactivation, but you can ignore that and just get the Activation Tool as it's also used for activations.

Download the zip from that article and extract both files to your computer. Make sure the files remain together in the same folder. Then run ActivationTool.exe and see if you can manually activate using that version of the tool.

Regards

Thanks for the response.

It's a different issue this time: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel...

What computer are you running the Activation Tool from? Can you confirm that the computer has internet access and isn't connecting through a proxy? Are you able to run the activation tool from a different computer that does have internet access and isn't using a proxy? Note that if you use the Activation Tool on a different computer than the one that the Laserfiche Server is installed on, then you will need to use the "Activate another computer" option and manually provide the fingerprint and host ID of the computer where the Laserfiche Server is.

Yes, the computer has internet access and I just checked - it isn't connecting through a proxy. And I ran the activation tool from the same computer that has the Laserfiche server.

Open the ActivationTool.exe.config file in an editor. Look for

useDefaultWebProxy="true"

and change the value to false. Save the change to the file. Then try running the Activation Tool again.

I did that and I got the same error: Could not establish trust relationship for the SSL/TLS secure channel...

Hi Eric,

Sounds like you have a firewall issue or ports being blocked which is not allowing the activation tool to get out to activation.laserfiche.com. I've had this many times in the past on customer sites.

I would go for the offline activation mode by getting your activation key, hardware fingerprint of the LF server and Host ID. Then get outside your current network with no firewalls and activate Laserfiche using the activationtool.exe program, get your lf.licx and activationkey file, get those onto your network and use those to install LF server.

Bear in mind that if your LSAP has expired you will only be able to activate the current version of Laserfiche you have installed.

Also you will not be able to activate the new license if you have not first deactivated the old license. Check out this KB for help deactivating - https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1012301

Good luck!
