Question

Install Laserfiche 7.2.1.407 on Windows 2008 (not R2)

asked on February 24, 2015 Show version history

We currently have Laserfiche 7.2.1.407 running on Windows 2003 in our Prod environment and want to upgrade the O/S to Windows 2008 (not R2) before the Microsoft declared July deadline.

We also have a sketchy Dev environment running Laserfiche 7.2.0.297 on Windows 2003, this environment has several issues and was not likely setup, configured, maintained in a proper manner.   We are leaning towards rebuilding the Dev environment from scratch built upon Windows 2008.

Is there any documentation or recommendations we can refer to that would help us rebuild our Laserfiche Dev environment and inherit all of our existing configuration settings from the Prod environment?

Likewise, is there a proper method for us to copy some of our Prod data (or all of it) into our Dev environment?

This would provide us a clean stable supported Dev environment to move forward with, and we can use what we learn to build up a clean Prod environment on Windows 2008 as well.

Thanks for clarifications about supported O/S versions.

Hi Andrew,

I'm pretty sure you will have to upgrade Laserfiche also if you want to move onto Windows Server 2008 R2. Laserfiche 8.1.0 is the oldest version of LF that support 2008 R2.

Laserfiche 7 -https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1011814

Laserfiche 8 -https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1012409

Laserfiche 9 -https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1013137

Hope this helps!

At this point, with Server 2008 already an out of date product, I would skip Server 2008 and go to Server 2012.  This would put you on the current Windows server platform and give you a longer time frame before you were forced to upgrade again due to end of life.

I would also recommend that you skip LF 8 and go to the current version of LF 9.  Again this puts you on the current platform and will give you the longest period before having to upgrade in the future.

Thanks for the clarifications.   The bump to Windows 2008 is intended as a transitional state to gain a little more 'extended support' time for the O/S while plans, commitments, and budgets etc. are established for a full Laserfiche upgrade.   At this time, we do not expect the Laserfiche upgrade will occur this year.

btw, This table indicates LFS v.7 is supported on 2008R2, while Weblink v.7 is not.

Interesting how the 2 KB articles conflict.... wink

I wouldn't really call it a conflict. KB 1012418 lists WebLink 7 as supported on Windows 2008, but not on 2008 R2. As a rule, we don't go back and retest older versions of a product when new operating systems come out unless they are widely used. The latest release of WebLink 7 was over 3 years old at the time Windows 2008 R2 was released. WebLink 8 was already available.

WebLink 7 is not supported on Windows 2008 R2 because it uses .Net 1.1 which is not supported on Windows 7 or higher: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2489698

That said, I'll see what we can do to make the 2 articles clearer.

yeah I was puzzled and left scratching my head when you stated that 2008R2 was not supported - I was sure I had read that it was supported, and sure enough there it is in 1012418.
