Question

Shifty Shades of Grey

asked on February 5, 2015

Hi all,

I wanted to let you know some feedback I've received on the look and feel of client version 9.2 after an upgrade.

The customer doesn't like the appearance of new lighter shades of colour used at the top of each search customisation, here:

They also don't like the paler grey used to highlight a selected entry when it's not in the active window. This one might be clearer with a short exercise:

  1. With the preview pane turned off, select a document in Laserfiche. A deep, rich blue indicates the one you have chosen.
  2. Turn the preview pane on. Focus should switch to it.
  3. The chosen document remains selected, but the blue turns to a paler shade of grey.

The same effect can be achieved by clicking anywhere outside of Laserfiche whilst an entry is selected. The complaint is that it's too difficult to see what is selected. On some monitor configurations, including the ones used by the customer, they are near invisible.

I've recommended changing the contrast/brightness to see if it yields better results, and also had a look through the Windows appearance settings to see if there's anything helpful in there. There doesn't seem to be, but if anyone knows I would be all ears.

Thanks for reading,
Martin

Hi Martin,

Thank you for the feedback.

With regard to searching, I would like to clarify. Are the complaints regarding the 9.2 search pane colors also that it is too hard to see what is selected? Or are there more specific issues that users are having with that color scheme?

The highlight color for an actively selected entry in Laserfiche is controlled by the Windows color scheme. To change it, go into Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Personalization > Window Color and Appearance. From there, open up the Advanced appearance settings.

Specifically, the color in question can be configured in the "3D Objects" section. It is color 1. Note, however, that this color also controls the background color for general windows open on the machine. For a more extreme example, see below:

Hi Kelsey,

Thank you very much for the info, the 3D objects colour is dope. I found that if I select the white option in the top left, the selected document stays the same shade of blue when focus shifts away from Laserfiche. Because it's white the impact on the other windows is minimised as well. I'll try it out on the customers machine and hopefully they'll like it.

As for the search pane, it's actually the background colour for the header of each search customisation. For example behind where it says "Text" or "Within Volume". On some monitor configurations the colour used basically doesn't show up, perhaps a picture would be better:

Sorry for the quality, I had to use my phone as regular screenshots would not have shown the difference. I switched my monitor settings between the photos and the colour fill around "Within Volume" became much clearer.

Like I say, I've asked them to try and tweak their own monitor settings but I wanted to share the feedback nonetheless, in case this topic should come up for future versions.
