You can use the Deadline activity to set a time limit on how long to give a user to finish a task. In the primary branch you would put the route to the original user, and then in the Deadline branch put the alternate action you would take and how long before you run that alternate branch.

What you could do then is wrap the entire workflow in a Deadline or Escalation activity. The workflow would start with assigning a field which would say "Assigned to". The primary branch would then be the actual process, while the deadline/escalation branch would notify a manager that time has elapsed. Then it would wait until the manager had assigned a new point person by changing that field, at which point the workflow would reroute the document to the new person.

Also, keep your eyes open for an upcoming Forms release which will incorporate this feature.

Thanks Kevin, but we must have a deadline on every task.  It’s more like a supervisor privilege to reassign the task to another user on any given time.
