Question

Files upload freezes?

asked on January 28, 2015

Hi

I have a client that uses form to submit activities for field agents. The agents are using Galaxy note 10.1 to submit forms.  Agent are using local Telcom.(such as Verizon) hot spots to be online.  One of the requirement is to upload an image.  Some times the picture ends uploading, it does not show the picture name in the list, and freezes the tablet.   Than they have to refresh the page and upload the image again to resubmit.

The version of the form is Version 9.1.1.1522 and I am not using "save to repository" option in Forms config, I am using the tasks in process manager to save the forms with fields attached.

I am suspecting the internet communication, but I am not sure about that.   I would expect the form  to give some error and not freeze if this was caused by network drop.   Almost all users (3 are testing at the moment) experiencing the same issue.

I would appreciate some help with this issue.

Thanks

Hey Farzali,

It's tough to diagnose the problem without seeing it firsthand, but I would suggest running some tests to see if you can isolate the problem.  I would recommend testing from different internet connections; a fast wifi connection where you have a strong reliable signal vs. an unreliable hotspot connection.  If you find that the issue only occurs when connecting to the hotspot, then we likely have found the problem.  Just like any website, when trying to upload content, especially larger files like images, you'll want to make sure that your upload speeds are sufficient and your connection is uninterrupted.

You mentioned that you're not using "save to repository".  I think what you meant was that you're not using "Save to Laserfiche".  The Save to Repository action is within the service task in the Business Process Modeler.  The Save to Laserfiche task is set up in the forms config page.  Can you confirm this assumption?

Please report back with information gathered from the tests you run!  I'm curious to see if a higher quality connection will be all that is required to solve this issue.

Hello Rob, thank for taking my call

Yes you are correct I meant "Save to Laserfiche" in Forms Config Page.  Storing done via Service Tasks.

I had tested this for a prolonged period with the following observation and I know the main cause of this is network disconnection or unreliable connection.

-With a connected PC we have no problem always uploads fine

-I was using a Samsung Galaxy note 8 tablet and I had only 3 time this problem (upload would end without uploaded file but would freeze the browser) happen to me during a period of 3 months . For me that wasn't bad and the ratio was tolerable.   My wireless environment was home or office which with reasonably reliable connection

-I also, tested Nokia 10 (not sure the model) inch which kept locking up (within the same network environment).. In this case the ratio was around 50 percent.  Not very good, for that reason I suggested Samsung Galaxy thinking that Nokia might have a issue.

-Now the client is testing Samsung Galaxy 10.1 on the road and the upload and lockup issue is about 15 percent.   They are connecting to hots spots from Rogers and Verizon.

I understand that if you have no connection you can't upload and that is normal.  My problem is that the Submit button on the Form gray out (can't be selected) and screen locks.

Here is some ideas on the form is used:

When Sales agent visits the store he/she takes picture of the store and builds up the page and during this time he might take another picture(s).    The problem can happen in first upload or subsequent upload if he needs to add another image or file.      When the form freezes the Sales agent needs to refresh the form to start the form submission and re-enter all the values again.

I think the form should not freeze.  If there is an issue with the upload, it should error out and come back with no connection response but it should not freeze the browser.  When this happens, Sales agent needs to refresh the page (for another try) and loose content of the form.

I hope this helps, let me know if you need more info.....

Thaks

Hey Farzali,

Thank you very much for this information.  I've spoken with the Forms developers who suggested that you open a case.  They also suggested that you may want to try upgrading to the latest version.

Ok,  I am going to upgrade the Forms sever to 9.2 and test it if that does not fix the issue, I will open a support case.

Thanks for your help

Hi All

We just had the a similar issue when a user on an ipad when uploading a picture to a form using the LF App where the Image did not upload completely when the picture was taken using the ipad camera. The image can not be deleted and the submit button is greyed out. The Forms version is 10.1 Update 2.

The only way out of it was to kill/refresh the form to get out of this.

Is there any way to troubleshoot this issue as I see no error logging in the LF App?

Hi Steve,

Sorry that I didn't notice this post because it's grouped under Forms tag. It sounds like a mobile issue.

We optimized upload performance, would you let me know if this still happens with latest Laserfiche app and mobile server?

I haven't heard this from the client in a while. I will follow up and let you know if it continues to cause us challenges.
