I am on a Rio System and I am getting the strangest error trying to log in

posted on January 27, 2015

The system is saying "The maximum number of sessions that this server instance is licensed for has been reached."

I am on Rio, the licensing is not done by sessions, it is done by users. Does this make any logical sense? There is no options that I know of to license by sessions, that is for Group Server or Classic Licensing.

When a user tries to go over their 4 sessions they get a message that the number of sessions has reached the licensed limit. In this case there is no sessions currently active on the server and it is saying the maximum number of sessions that this server instance is licensed for has been reached. It is a really strange message for a Rio system.

It went away after re-starting the Laserfiche Server service.

What may have happened is that, for some reason, it was unable to load the Rio license file. The fact that restarting the LF Server service fixed the issue would make sense if it was some temporary license file issue.

If this happens again, I would view the server in the admin console and see if the licensing information is correctly displayed.

Ok, the license looks good.

In Avante there is a named user check box which is removed entirely in Rio, but you can still access the status of this check box through the column display. Is the data in that column display accurate?

In Rio, directory named users (i.e. Windows Accounts) and devices are managed in the License Manager or Laserfiche Directory Server. Repository named users are still managed in the Laserfiche Administration Console through a drop down in the user properties, although the number of repository named user licenses allocated to a specific Laserfiche Server is handled in the License Manager or Laserfiche Directory Server.

To confirm whether the Laserfiche Server is properly detecting directory named users, the easiest test is to add the Windows Account as a trusted account in the Laserfiche Administration Console. Then looking at the "Named User" column, it should read "Full" or "False", etc. If it says "Full" then you're fine, but if it says "False" then the Laserfiche Server isn't recognizing that Windows Account as being a named user.

Please refer to this previous Answers thread which discusses the number of concurrent sessions a named user or named device license can have.

Also, if the user that's trying to connect isn't actually a named user or connecting from a named device, then note that the Laserfiche Server will allow up to two non named user (administrative type) connections at any given time, i.e. for the default ADMIN user in a repository who isn't assigned a named user license.
