Empower 2015 VM is now available for download!

posted on January 5, 2015

Hi Empowerers,

The Empower 2015 VM is now available for download here! The virtual machine requires VMWare Player 6 (included in the zip file), a Core i5 or better processor, 8 GB of RAM, and 50 GB hard drive space (SSD preferred). If you have trouble with the download or need assistance setting things up, stop by the Information Center when you get to the Empower conference! See you there!

Just of curiosity, why does this page mention laptops for hands on courses will be provided, has that changed and now I need to worry about bringing a laptop ?

Hi Sumeet, no need to worry! We still provide laptops for labs, but now we also let people register with their own machine if they prefer. It's all personal preferance.

If you enrolled for labs and didn't choose the "bring your own laptop" option, you don't need to worry about it.

Hi Tony!

  1. Open VMWare Player, and click "Open a Virtual Machine."
  2. Browse to the downloaded VM files, and double-click Empower15.
  3. From VMWare Player, make sure Empower15 is selected in the left-hand pane, and click "Play virtual machine."

Once we have the required hardware and got the download and VM player, what is the next step.  I would rather set it up now, ahead of time, than try to get it going in the info centre.  please advise.

Im stuck on extracting the .rar file (the big one, I just downloaded) When I tried to expand it using WinZip, it said it was corrupted. Suggestions?

Is there anyway for you to make a .rar file self extracting?

Hey Tony,

We haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, and it's working fine on our end.  I think it's most likely that the file wasn't downloaded correctly.  If you check the properties of the zip, is it 16.4 gigs?  If not, you'll need to re-download it.  If it is, you should check the hash for the file.  The MD5 hash should be: e554b66beb82b726b4d9ac55eed19d78

If you're not sure how to check the hash, you can use this free utility: HashMyFiles.  Just point it at the rar file, and see what MD5 it spits back out at you.  If you don't get the same hash, then the download didn't work right.

If the hashes match up, and you're still having trouble, let us know, and we'll find an alternate solution for you!

Thanks Brett,

I finally got it to work.  I was trying to extract it on a network drive.  I re-downloaded (just in case) and extracted it locally instead, then copied the folders to the laptop. It is now working perfectly!  Thank you for your help.
