Question

How to merge documents and combine metadata from both documents?

asked on December 19, 2014

I need to combine some saved documents (not necessarily with same document names) in to one long document. How do I copy the metadata to the "primary (the one document left)" - instead losing them when the unwanted documents after  being combined? Thanks.

Hello Zhen,

I would recommend using Workflow to accomplish this task.  There are a lot of details that need to be considered before I can offer any specific recommendations.

1) How many documents need to be combined?

2) Is the metadata being copied into a multivalue field?  Are all fields directly correlated to fields that will be on the "Primary" document?  In other words, field A's metadata is copied from the old document into the new document's field A?

I may have some other questions depending on these responses, but this may help provide a bit more context.

Thank you, Rob, for answering my question. We don't have Workflow.  I ended up using the built-in Quick Fields "Merge" feature to accomplish the task. Thank you very much.
