Question

Setting up a development environment

asked on December 17, 2014

My organization has been working with Laserfiche at a very basic level for years, but we are just getting started with Forms, Workflows, Quick Fields, SDK.  We need to set up a development environment for the creation and testing of workflows and integrations, etc.  I'm having difficulty finding any documentation on the options and best practices for setting up such an environment.  Do we just need to create a new repository?  Do we need to build a new server or servers?  How do I hide the Dev environment from end users?  I hope there is a white paper about this subject, if not I think that it needs to be written.

There is not a best practice document for the specific creation of a dev environment but you can follow the regular installation instructions included in the product downloads and make some adjustments based on your needs.

I would suggest putting a development workflow, quickfields, forms, sdk, and the laserfiche server all on it's own server (virtual or otherwise).

You will also need a SQL Server which you can add into your enterprises existing architecture or create a local instance on the development machine.

Additionally I would suggest using a service account dedicated for development.

Without setting up this environment you can control development risk by adding another repository as you mentioned but this will only protect documents at a limited level. You will continue to have risk in Workflow, Quickfields, Forms, and SQL as each of these can potentially "runaway" and impact the production environment.

With Rio Licensing, you will have to purchase a separate license for QuickFields, so talk to your sales rep for pricing information. Let them know it's for development use. You can opt to use the same production instance of QuickFields and be vigilante as you do run the risk of creating a runaway session and preventing other quickfields sessions from performing.

Ultimately all of this rests on the mighty backbone of your SQL server, so having a dedicated development area there is vital.

Cheers,

Carl

Hi, it's been a few years since the last communication on this thread. Is there a some sort of whitepaper or documentation to assist customers on how to build development environments? or even how to synchronize production to development environments???

No problem. As far as hiding the development server from users, that's an option when installing the server (which I can't exactly find the help files at the moment) where you can specify to NOT broadcast the repository.

Then to manually attach you can follow the attach instructions and type in the address:

http://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/9.2/en-US/UserGuide/Laserfiche_Client.htm#cshid=Introduction/Attaching_a_Repository.htm
