Encrypting volumes

asked on November 12, 2014

We need to encryption some volumes on our Laserfiche server for security purposes.  Does anyone know how long it takes to encrpt a volume?  Is there some sort of forumla we can use to determine this?

Hey CeCe,

There are many factors that come into play when considering the length of time required to encrypt a volume such as the size of the volume, your encryption algorithm, the hardware of the machine performing the encryption, and the amount of resources that machine has dedicated to other processes.  With that in mind, there's really no way to figure out how fast the encryption will be before you try it.

One way that you can take a guess at how long it will take to encrypt a volume is to copy a small subset of files into a new volume on the same machine and same environment that you'll actually be performing the encryption.  Lets just say, for easy numbers, that you copy over 10 MB of files to the new volume and your largest volume is around 10 GB.  When you encrypt the 10 MB volume, make a note of how long that takes.  Lets say it took 1 minute.  And since there are 1024 MB in a GB, then you can take (1 minute) x (1024) = 1024 minutes for the largest volume.

This method is far from an exact science, so don't expect that the results of this experiment will give you a definite answer, but it should be in the same ballpark.

Hopefully this helps!  Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions!

Good luck!
