Question

LF Scanning with TWAIN driver not transferring images from scanner

asked on November 3, 2014

Hi,

I would like to put this out here to see if there are any others that tend to have similar problems with LF Scanning and TWAIN drivers.

I have a Kodak i2800 scanner connected to LF Scanning using a TWAIN driver on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. When initiating a scan, the scanner will pull pages through the feeder, but nothing is transferred to LF Scanning. When the scanner is done, the LF Scanning application does not seem to be aware of this, and it's still waiting for the images. The Red X button on the toolbar that will stop the scanning is enabled, as if it's still scanning/waiting for images.

The user then has to stop the scanning by pressing this button. When starting another scan again immediately, the images of the 2nd scan seem to come through. So why didn't it work the first time?

There are no errors reported.

This problem happens intermittently. Thinking that this might be a scanner issue, I've had this same scanner running on a Quick Fields workstation using the same TWAIN driver without any issues like this at all.

Anyone else experience this type of behaviour?

Thanks

Sheldon

Does the scanner have a "scan ahead" feature? We've seen this behavior with other scanners that wait for pages to be added until the user presses a Stop button.

Hi Miruna,

It's very possible that this could be the case. I will look into it further and see where I can disable this setting. When I find it, I will update this thread with the results.

Thanks

Sheldon

Hi Miruna,

I am still having some trouble with this scanner. I am unable to find the "ScanAhead" feature for the TWAIN driver. However, I did find it for the ISIS driver for this scanner.

The problem I'm running into now is that if I use the ISIS driver with LFScanning, no image comes through at all. An entry is created in the Scanned Documents list, but there is no image at all. Another issue is that the scanner scans on page at a time with a pause of about 1-2 seconds between each page.

So, I found this scanner app: C:\Windows\pixtran\Testappn.exe and used it to test with. I assume it's for ISIS only?

As you can see below in the screenshot, it has an option for ScanAhead. When disabled within this app, the scanner behaves "slowly" just like in LFScanning. When I enable ScanAhead, then it scans normal and fast. However, this app does not display an image, it simply shows a message that says X amount of pages were scanned.

So, in an effort to try and use ISIS as an alternative option in my troubleshooting, I have run into this problem.

Now, this ScanAhead feature is not accessible to me in any of the LF Scanning settings available. It seems it exists within this test app only.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Sheldon

Kodak's scanner guide shows a feeder timeout feature for TWAIN (page 40).

Usually with scan ahead, there's a stop button on the scanner that the user can press to signal that they're done scanning.

If you turn off the scan ahead option in the scanner's app and then use it with ScanConnect, does it behave differently?

Yes, using the Testappn.exe app, when turning off the Scan Ahead feature it behaves very differently. It scans a single page, waits 2 seconds, then scans the next page etc. When enabled, it scans normally. However, this setting is only available inside this standalone app, there does not seem to be a setting for it elsewhere.

When using the ISIS driver in LF Scanning, it behaves the same way, scan once and wait 2 seconds.

I have seen the feeder timeout option and I have disabled it in the TWAIN driver. This does not seem to fix the problem.

Hey Sheldon,

If you go to File>Scanner Options and select "use default scanner software" and then hit scan then you should get this options window.
