Feature Request: Autopopulate results as you type in the Quick Search

asked on October 30, 2014

Is it possible that in the future we are able to have it so when typing in the quick Search, (maybe only when searching text is disabled if that helps it be faster) for us to be presented with the current results that we would have if we performed the search?

It would be nice to have this functionality even if it only pulled in the results for the amount of items it can display in the Client window and we need to hit search in order for those options to be clickable. Having this functionality would be something that would help mimic functionality people have gotten used to with online features like Google's Search page

Thank you for the feature request!

This is not a feature that will be possible to support in the next several years due to performance implications. In addition to actively running a search with each letter typed, Laserfiche must also evaluate security filtering for each search run. Running this many quick searches alone can have performance implications. The additional step of evaluating security is very costly to do because of the flexibility of Laserfiche security; evaluating what a user has rights to search for and retrieve can include evaluating security inheritance and the interplay of all types of security with regard to precedence of rights.

Thanks, Kelsey. I hadn't thought about the security filtering. I can see how that would be a serious impediment to that kind of search. Your answer is very helpful, because I can pass it on to my customer.

Hi Ken,

What type of quick search would you see this being beneficial for? Text, Entry Names, Fields, Annotations, all of the above?

Besides mimicking functionality seen in online search engines, what added benefit do you foresee this feature providing to users?

One of our clients is asking for this to recreate a tool they are replacing.

The benefit of this functionality is that a user may not need to type the entire word(s) for their search to get the result they were looking for. It also allows them to correct their spelling on the fly. Over time, this type of functionality could save a user lots of time because they do not need to do a search, wait to find out they misspelled something or didn't have enough information for an accurate search results to be returned, and stuff like that.

I have a customer that has also requested this "instant search" capability. They have a workflow that appends names to an existing metadata field list of certain folder names in their repository. Before entering new metadata that would start this workflow, they check to be sure the name is not already entered (to prevent creating a duplicate name in the list). (It's a long list.) The current method they use is a saved basic search, entry names only, within the parent folder that contains the specially named subfolders. This works well, and seems fast to me. But instantly responsive, as Ken has described, would be even better...
