Question

Error 784 - Is it a SQL connection or a Client-Server connection issue?

asked on October 27, 2014

This article says this error is a client-server connection issue

https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1012887

While this one says it is a server - SQL connection issue

https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1013382

They were both updated recently but these are two entirely different situations. I would like to put a monitor on the correct connection, but a client connection is far different than a SQL connection.

If the issue doesn't affect other users connecting from other workstations, then it shouldn't be SQL related. KB 1013382 refers to when the Laserfiche Server can't communicate with the SQL Server so in that scenario, no user would be able to log into the repository.

If the issue is only coming from one workstation, I would see if it's user specific and/or Windows profile specific, i.e. if you log into the workstation as a different Windows user, maybe one with administrative rights, is there still an issue trying to log into the repository as any user?

You'll need to provide additional context. Are users getting the 784 error when trying to log into the repository using the Client? Does the issue occur for all users or just some? Does the issue occur when using the Client that's installed on the same computer as the Laserfiche Server? Does the issue occur regardless of using Windows Authentication or Laserfiche Authentication? While the error message can be from various causes, knowing the additional contextual information pertaining to the issue will help point you in the right direction to start troubleshooting.

This is happening for a specific workstation trying to login through the LF Client. I told the customer that it was a SQL connection error based on the KB article. But then I found the KB article saying it was a service connection error (which is more logical). Just don't want to lead them in the wrong direction.

Ok, yes that is the KB article that says it is when the service is unable to communicate with the SQL server. Looks like this is a workstation to service connection issue. We are going to look into the monitoring the network connection.
