Question

Accessing Documents through Hyperlinks on an IPad

asked on October 10, 2014

We have a customer that is  trying to go paperless with their City Council agendas utilizing their existing Laserfiche configuration.  They are on Avante and Web Distribution Portal (WebLink bundle).  As a trial, they have installed Good Reader on one of their iPads.  The Good Reader App works with PDF documents.  Their Agenda Top Sheet is currently a PDF document with hyperlinks to each agenda item.  The agenda items reside in the Laserfiche repository and are in TIFF.  Once someone clicks on one of the items it directs them to a Laserfiche document in the repository via WebLink.  Most everything in their repository is in TIFF.  They want to be able to use an iPad, click on the hyperlink(s) and be directed to the agenda items which they want to also convert to PDF for download purposes.

Using a regular workstation, this process works fine - but using an iPad - not so much.  Would appreciate feedback on the best way to do this.

Thank you.

I think they need to rethink how they are currently doing things by building a workflow process for compiling their complete agenda packet. As things are approved, they can be added to the packet so everything is together and then you would only need to worry about one document.

Those links are to Weblink? On a workstation it may be working fine with WebDAV enabled, not sure how this works otherwise unless they are hyperlinks to the weblink URL.

Hello Hedy,

Perhaps I'm not completely following, but it seems like we're missing some information from the original post.

They want to access the PDFs via iPad and click on links to open documents in WebLink?  From your post:  "Once someone clicks on one of the items it directs them to a Laserfiche document in the repository via WebLink"

I think I'm failing to understand where the issue is.  If you could add some clarification, we can take another look.

Hi Rob,

The agenda top sheet is a PDF document that is emailed out to recipients .  It has hyperlinks in the body of the document that point to items that are in the Laserfiche repository that are being displayed through WebLink. In other words, the hyperlinks point to the WebLink URL

On a regular workstation or laptop, when you click on a hyperlink in the PDF agenda top sheet, it takes you to the relevant item/document residing in Laserfiche (displayed through WebLink).  The user can then download the relevant item/document by printing to PDF on their workstation.

On an iPad, they are not able to do that - specifically print to PDF and download the document locally.  Please let me know if you need further clarification.

Unless you are getting an error (in which case, please provide a screenshot of the error), I think this is just a matter of understanding how iPads work.

iPads do not store files the same way as, say, a Windows laptop. You don't just have a generic file system where you can save PDFs. Instead, you can store a PDF locally by choosing to "Open in..." and then selecting a PDF reading app from the list. Apple has specific instructions for using their app iBooks.

The "Open in..." option appears when viewing a PDF in Safari if you tap once anywhere on document and looks like this:

Thank you for your response Brianna.  We will follow the above as suggested.  If the users encounters an error, we will take a screenshot and send it over for review.
