A .lnk file is reserved for Microsoft shortcuts to .exe files (learned from here http://filext.com/file-extension/LNK) to link to a file in Laserfiche you need it to be a .lfe file extension. The quickest way I found to create this link to a file in Laserfiche is to hold the left control and shift keys while dragging the file to the desktop. This creates a shortcut instead of dragging and copying the file out of Laserfiche. Hope this helps.
As Tony says, the LNK is merely a Windows shortcut to the target file. The LNK file does not contain any content related to that target file; it only knows the file path. This means if you moved the WMV video file elsewhere, or deleted it, you cannot access that video file using the LNK file anymore.
If the WMV file needs to be stored in a secure place, you may consider importing the WMV file into Laserfiche, and then create a shortcut to that Laserfiche entry.
Shortcuts to a Laserfiche entry (document) can be placed in any Laserfiche folder or Windows folder. There is a subtle technical difference between the two. A Laserfiche shortcut placed in a Windows folder is actually an "LFE" file; clicking on it will launch the Laserfiche client and navigate to the document. But they should mostly work in the same way.
Hi, Ryan
If I double-click a .lnk file inside my Laserfiche repository using the desktop client (version 10.4.1) the associated Windows file opens with no issue.
However, if I double-click the same shortcut using the Web Client on Chrome this creates a file with a .download extension in Windows, it won't open the associated Windows file the way it does in the desktop client.
Is it possible to open Windows files from the Web Client by using Windows shortcuts (the way it works with the desktop client)?
Thank you,
Rob
This would be super helpful for our organization. Our staff use the Web Client exclusively, and enabling .lnk files to be accessible (via Web Client) would be very helpful. In order to help current and future staff locate historical project files that are buried under our past engineering staff's sub folders, this simple function from the Web Client would be very valuable. We are not migrating over complete historical project files, as they contain gb's and gb's of ROT that we do not have the resources to deal with yet.
