Question

Replacing a Physical Volume With a Logical Volume of the Same Name

asked on September 24, 2014

We had a large physical volume (550G) called ‘TRCA’. We are migrating everything in it to a new logical volume called ‘TRCA2’. I want to follow the ‘John’ example on page 8 of the following white paper (and change the name of 'TRCA2' to 'TRCA' once everything is migrated, and the old volume is deleted) :

https://support.laserfiche.com/GetFileRepositoryEntry.aspx?id=2580&mode=download

We have a number of Workflows which create entries using the ‘TRCA’ volume. Also, most users have ‘TRCA’ set as their default import volume.

It has been suggested to us that renaming TRCA2 to TRCA could cause issues, as the old and new ‘TRCA’ volume IDs will be different. I would greatly appreciate some feedback on this.

Hi Miranda,

You should be able to rename TRCA2 to TRCA, even though the new volume is a logical volume. I did some testing, and any workflows that point to TRCA will still run successfully after the volume switch and name change. Users may have to reset their default volume preferences however. While doing the migration, keep in mind a few things:

1. Before making any changes, I highly recommend backing up your volumes.

2. Changing the name of a logical volume does not affect the names of existing physical volumes within it. Any future physical volumes created will reflect the name change.

3. Changing the name of the volume will not change the volume path.

Hi Jason,

Thank you for the response!

Is renaming and changing the paths of the physical volumes generally advisable? I performed some testing with test volumes and docs, and everything seemed fine... but it was with a limited number of docs and rollover volumes.

One thing I forgot to test was the restoring of items from the recycle bin. Do you know if there could be issues if the original volume ID no-longer exists? I can test that on Monday, if needed.

Also, is it okay to delete the folder of a volume (from Windows) which no-longer exists in the LF Administration Console? Obviously I would verify that it was empty first.

Once our TRCA2 volumes are backed up this weekend, we will proceed with the volume renaming.

How you set up the new volumes is really up to you. You would only need to change the path if you wanted to store your volumes in another location. Remember, just like changing a logical volume's name, changing the path of a logical volume only affects future physical volumes. If you wish to change the path of the existing physical volumes, you must go in and change each path in the Laserfiche Admin Console.

When in the recycle bin, documents still exist in the volumes. That means any documents in the recycle bin at the time a volume is renamed will remain in that volume through the name change. When restored, the document will be in the newly named volume. For example, say a document in the DEFAULT volume was recycled, and then the volume name was changed to DEFAULT1. Whether restored or in the recycle bin, that document is in the DEFAULT1 volume.

Yes, deleting old volume folders is fine as long as you make sure you are not deleting anything important. There shouldn't be anything in the volume after the migration, but it is always good to double check!

Good luck with the migration and renaming! Let me know how it goes! :)
