Question

What Happens to a Completed Form if I Delete a Field?

asked on September 23, 2014

We currently have some forms that require a wet signature. We are using the custom fields and code shown at last year's conference to accommodate this. We have hundreds of forms that are currently in a completed state. In Forms 9.2 I saw that a new built in signature field will be available. What will happen to the completed forms if we remove the custom fields and code we were using and insert the new signature field? Will the completed forms retain the signature or will it be deleted?

The signature field in 9.2 release will not affect the custom field or other variables on the form. Kenneth is correct if you do not delete the variable the data is still kept. If you would like to view it from the submission page or approval page, you can add a field rule to show the custom HTML only when the custom signature is not empty. It should automatically switch between custom signature or built-in signature.

Images saved to repository will not be affected after the change.

If you delete the fields from every form, does it not automatically delete the variables?

No, you have to manually delete the variables.

If you do not delete the variable from the form process, it shouldn't cause a problem. I am not sure though about if you were to delete that variable, but as I said, you can give it a test now with a sample form and taking any random field and removing it from the form after a few submissions and then trying to see what happens if you delete that variable altogether.

Submission views are just tiff images retrieved from the server. They should remain unchanged from the changes, but that is separate from the variables list

Great question Blake! If you don't mind, I'd like to use your question for the Q&A portion of the upcoming Webinar on What's New in Laserfiche 9.2 so we can share the information with the webinar attendees who have yet to actively engage with us on Answers.

That would be great. Does that mean I have to wait until then to get an official Laserfiche answer?
