Question

Exporting List Contents - Data overrun into next Line

asked on September 17, 2014

I have come across some strange behaviour when exporting List Contents to CSV from search results. The problem seems to be when one of the Columns is a Multi-Value Field and the text contain a CR (Carriage Return), then where the CR is found, the text is placed on the next line in the CSV/XLS doc.

I have tried exporting as TAB or Comma delimited, but the results are the same. As a test I tried the Print Folder Contents option and printing it to a PDF file, and this does not seem to do the same. The text is kept together for that specific Column.

So I would like to know if there is a way around it or is this just the way it handles the exported data? It is causing a lot of clean-up to be done in the data once it is in the CSV.

It is preferred to use TAB delimited as the text could potentially include commas that also makes the data export incorrectly.

See screenshot below of the overrun in xls:

This issue has been fixed in 9.2, https://support.laserfiche.com/HTMLFPresenter.aspx?id=3055. When use Tab as field delimiter character, the carriage return will be escaped.

This thread might help you:

There's no easy built in method to deal with this but a simple script should be able to help immensly.

This is a bug in the client, we will look into fixing it for an upcoming release.

Hi Niqi Li,

We have upgraded to 9.2 Client and ran a test on the export to List Contents again.

Further to my colleague, Vincent's post above; the results that we are now experiencing are as follows :

We have text field where the following was entered in the notes field :

We then exported the List Contents and the first line of the notes has been exported and the second line has been dropped completely. Is the fix in 9.2 supposed to truncate the data after the carriage return as in the output is as follows:

Thanks in advance.

The second line should be in the exported file, excel is sometimes picky with how it displays it. When i export as a tab-delimited file, I get the second line showing up in excel if i open the csv by double clicking. If i open the file from File->open, excel thinks the carriage return marks the beginning of a new row. See the attached image.

Thanks Robert !

Further to your post above what i found is that for that specific column excel automatically sets the column to wrap text. If i undo and redo the wrap text the information is then displayed correctly.

Thank you for your feedback it was helpful.

regards,

Bharthi
