Empower Labs - Bring your own laptop!

posted on September 16, 2014

I just wanted to reinforce something I heard during the webinar and at Empower last year.

If you are able, set up the Empower VM on your own laptop and use it in the labs!

The setup shouldn't be too hard to do (and the wonderful folks in the Information Center can help onsite, if you need it)

Unless I'm mistaken, you can get into any lab where there is an empty chair.  Some of the labs run out of workstations quickly.

And, you get to take the lab home with you.  I think the VM last year had 30-day or 60-day eval licenses on everything, so you can practice what you learned and show the folks back at work.

Hi.

Wondering if there would there be free wifi access available in labs for our devices we bring ?

I need to request a laptop to bring with me to the conference, our security for downloading is pretty locked down, so I was wondering if you think this will be an issue when I bring it to the conference for configuration?

Or is there a link for the 2015 conference that will provide the specs needed when bringing your own laptop?

That's perfectly fine. You can come to the Info Center and we'll have USB sticks that you can use to copy the files directly onto the machine.

So is there anything installed? The laptop I am bringing will not have the LF client installed.

The USB sticks will contain a virtual machine with all the software. You don't need anything on the machine itself.

System requirements:

·         64-bit OS for the host (laptop) machine
·         VMWare Player 6
·         Intel i5 CPU or better
·         8 GB of RAM
·         at least 50 GB free hard drive space, SSD recommended

Once we have all the requirements, are there some instructions to set it up?

Instructions are inside the rar file that you download with the VM inside

It's taking my computer hours to download the rar file...  Is this common?

This will not be a speedy procedure but still worth trying before the conference (in the comfort of your own office). That way you can have more fun at the conference itself.

We had a few challenges installing that you may or may not experience:

  • slow download and slow subsequent extraction of the .RAR file because of the huge (16GB to 46GB) file size
  • VT-x was turned off in the BIOS of my laptop and had to be turned on before the VM would launch
  • Several requests for software updates and downloads before it was ready to go.
  • Now it is working fine!

See you all at the conference.  I'll be the one scamming cookies at the info center!

OK - I'll just have to be patient...

Thanks!
