Question

Document pages disappear

asked on September 16, 2014 Show version history

Recently users are reporting that pages of some of the documents are lost. I saw audit history. There is no delete pages event or delete purge recycle event on that document. Also no pages were found in recycle bin. Users indexed the document and was working on it. But when they opened it again the pages were gone. Has anyone come across this?

Thanks.

Do you happen to have any workflows that involve the move pages activity? Maybe when the user is saving the files back to the repository a workflow is moving the pages away and you get them back by generating pages again manually.

EDIT: What happens when you try generating pages? I would check the workflow designer to see if the last modified time matches up with any workflow start times.

Are these PDF docs with associated pages? Are you sure that they are looking at the pages panel and not the electronic document or vice-versa?

They worked on the document, could see pages. Please see the attachment.

Administrator edit: screenshot was removed because it contained personal information.

I edited the screenshot to remove metadata. It just shows the this document has no pages message.

This issue is happening only for 1 or 2 documents abruptly. Workflow doesn't have any logic to remove or move the pages. Checked workflow designer. Didn't find anything abnormal there.

How do you generate pages manually?

Right-Click on the document and "Generate Pages..."

That option should only appear if the user account has rights for that as well as the entry has an electronic file component

I am using LF 8.3 client. I see the option but it's grayed out. I do have rights. I even tried with admin login. It's still grayed out. :(

Then the document does not have an electronic file component to it or you do not have any application that can open that file natively. is it a PDF, TIFF? if you go to the properties, in the 'Document' tab, what is the extension and type at the bottom of that window?

No extension. Screenshot attached.

I saw properties of other docs which has pages. They don't have extensions too. This document was scanned as .tif at a network location and sent to repository by QF.

So the users modified the documents after the QF session acted on them? What is the document viewer view set to? Tiff images are native documents, they will need the pages panel open, but the other documents with pages may be able to be seen in the Electronic file pane and the pages pane.

EDIT: try toggling (clicking on the icons to enable and disable the feature) for the icons in the toolbar when opening up the document viewer for these documents. I expect you will find one that works. Should be towards the right-half most side of the toolbar. You can hover over them to find what they do.

I reprocessed the tif manually in QF session and saw that another document with 0 pages was created. reason was barcode page was the 2nd page that was scanned and so all the matadata was filled but the pages were not found. I am pretty sure that entry never had pages but users stated otherwise and that's where the whole confusion was. Not sure how they worked on a blank entry. Sorry for wasting your time on a non-issue. Thanks for your help.
