Question

Building archiving solution for 20k - 25k users

asked on September 7, 2014

I am building archiving solution for LF server and public portal with 10 full users and Unlimited number of retrieval users (between 20k - 25k users)

My question relates to the sizing of hardware.

Would you recommend the CPU Cores, or speed, or dual core, or more memory to accommodate this number of retrieving users.

There needs to be a lot more information about the situation.

How many users do you expect to be logged in at the same time?  This will play a large part in the load put on the web host(s).

Do you plan to put up a load balanced cluster of web servers to service the load?

Keep in mind that when we say concurrent users, we mean people that are actively using the system (i.e. have made a request from the server within the last 15 seconds). That number will probably be much smaller than the number of sessions open in the Admin Console. There may be lots of people who have left a page open, but you're concerned with the number of people taxing Laserfiche and the web server above all.

The "Laserfiche Hardware Planning and Specifications" white paper discusses hardware recommendations in depth. Hardware requirements vary depending on which products are in use, how many concurrent, active connections you expect, and how much information is being stored. It's a difficult question that will require a fair amount of research and estimation on your part, but the white paper will provide some helpful guidelines.

Let me ask my question in another way wink

If we assumed that I want to implement a Laserfiche Avante and Web link Public Portal with the following parameters:

Daily Scanning Pages = 2000 - 3000

Daily Viewing Pages = 10,000

No. of Full Users = 10
No. of Retrieval Users = 20k- 25k

According to the (Laserfiche Hardware Planning and Specifications) document from Laserfiche site. in Page 7: it says:

Concurrent users Cores RAM
200-400 users 2-4 4-8GB
400-1,000 users 4-12 8-16GB
>1,000 users Contact reseller or Regional Manager

What is the Hardware planning recommendations with high availability to prepare the environment ?

Hello Emad,

The hardware configuration depends on how many concurrent users will be accessing the system. Do you have any guess as to the upper limit of concurrent users that you plan to support?

Thanks Rob for your reply.

The upper limit of concurrent users as retrieval around 4000.

Woah!  4000 users is a LOT of concurrent users.  Larger than any other WebLink system that we've set up in the past.

I think the best idea here would be to start with supporting 1000 or so concurrent users with our recommendations from the whitepaper you referenced.  A key point here is to make sure that you're actively monitoring the performance of the system to ensure that the users aren't maxing out the resources in the system.  If you're finding that supporting 1000 users isn't enough and you're maxing your resources, then you can create a load balancing environment to support additional users.
