Question

copy column profile from user to user

asked on September 4, 2014

I am trying to copy, from Administration Console - Attributes, ColumnProfiles(s).  I have done this in the past, on a previous version (but not since we have updated from 9.0 to 9.1.1.486).  I would go to the Attributes tab, choose "View subset - ColumnProfile," select the column view I want to export, save it to my computer and then import it to the user who I want to copy it to.  The profile is listed on the user's profile I copied it to but when I log in to their account on the Client and attempt to load this column view, only their previous saved column views are being listed.

Hi Amy,

I think you're copying from the wrong attribute. In 9.1, we migrated the column profile info from [ColumnProfile] to [XmlColumnProfiles]. Both client and WA 9.1 should read from the [XmlColumnProfiles] set, not [ColumnProfiles] one.

When you first log in w/ a user in a 91 client, that user's column profile attribute should be migrated to the new format by default. But if you make an update to a user's column profiles in 9.1 client, those updates will be reflected in the [XmlColumnProfile] attributes only.

Try copying from there and see if that makes a difference.

Amy,

The topic has been discussed in more details here:

https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/55677/Web-Access-911--Search-results-list-not-loading-as-user-scrolls

The challenge is merging the column profile you want to keep with existing column profiles the user(s) may have.

Pre-9.1, you could simply copy the column profile attribute and add it to all the users you wanted and it would be added to list of profiles available to the user(s).

In 9.1+, You cannot import the [XmlColumnProfiles] attribute because it will overwrite all the column profiles a user has, if any. Instead, you need to EDIT the [XmlColumnProfiles] attribute and add the piece that applies to the profile you created, specifically the <profile name='ColProfileName'>...</profile> XML.

The easiest way to do this is to add to update the XmlColumnProfiles attributes on the Everyone user. If you are okay with propagating the profile to all users, then this is easiest.

Ryan's response in the thread I linked to has a nice XML code sample and another link to a nice XML guide.

Interestingly, the online help files do not contain the attribute name by direct distinction: http://www.laserfiche.com/support/webhelp/Laserfiche/9.1/en-US/UserGuide/Laserfiche_Client.htm#FolderBrowser/Column_Profiles.htm%3FTocPath%3DConfiguring%20Behavior%20and%20Functionality%7CConfigure%20the%20Folder%20Browser%7CAssigning%20Columns%20to%20the%20Details%20View%7C_____1

Maybe this should be a feature request to have more of the attributes publicly available in the help files

this isn't a feature I want to add - I have definitely done this in the past for these users.  it seems that this update is restricting me from doing this now.  I guess, that's all I can do - make the request and hope this feature becomes active again.  thanks, ken.  smiley

I meant the feature request of adding more documentation to the documentation. It's just the name on LF Answers for requests I guess.

You definitely should have the capability to do this, Maybe a LF employee can help us out here with it.

Hey Amy,

I would definitely suggest giving Ryan's idea a try first, but I wanted to let you know that I just got off a chat with Sierra Singh from AIS, your VAR.  If you aren't able to get things set up properly using Ryan's advice, I'd suggest giving this a shot.  (The portion below is copied from our chat log)

10:01:32 AM [Rob Misconin] So if I understand correctly, they're not copying all the column profile attributes because they don't want to have all the column profiles that the "source" user has set up?
10:01:50 AM [Rob Misconin] So they have Column Profile A, B, and C, but they only want this new user to have column profile A?
10:01:57 AM [Sierra Singh] Right
10:02:16 AM [Rob Misconin] Have you tried setting up the columns as you want them on one user and then copying ALL column attributes?
10:02:52 AM [Rob Misconin] So maybe create a test user, set up column profile A, and then export/import ALL column profile attributes from that user
10:03:08 AM [Rob Misconin] Instead of trying to snipe out that one column profile from the larger set?

Let us know if you're still having trouble and we'll take another look!
