Question

Bilingual capability

asked on August 26, 2014

In the scenario where we have a bilingual workforce, how is it handled within Laserfiche?  Specifically questions:

- I assume that each end user can have their client settings based on their preferred language and that it is not forced by server settings?  If so, does this work with the web based products as well (Web Access, Weblink, Forms, etc.)

- If the OCR is done on a document in one language, will it be searchable in another language?

Is there anything else to be concerned with if a customer has a bilingual workforce?

As per the OCR question, I don't think it can be searched in both languages. The reason being when you set your OCR language setting, it is essentially telling the OCR software what type of characters to look for in a certain language, so that's what is stored in the OCR text file. Since Laserfiche does not have the ability to translate languages, I don't believe it can make it searchable in another language.

Thanks Blake - That was my assumption as well - was just seeing if Laserfiche had some magic pixy dust:)

Laserfiche products come with language packs. The user can choose which language they want. In some cases, the web products pick the language based on the user's browser language and some of the desktop products default to the language of the OS. This behavior can be overridden by the user. There is no server-side mandated language.

OCR is done in the language selected by the user. The text is searchable as-is, it is not translated to other languages.

Thanks for the clarification Miruna.   I don't know how to get around the OCR issue, but the starting point is knowing that there are no translators in search to accommodate a search needing to be run in one language, whereas the OCR text is in another language.  We have a large multi-national customer asking.
