Question

Webdav Implications

asked on August 19, 2014

Hi all,

I recently read that the Laserfiche repository can be access through a map drive by using webdav. This is a very interesting feature but however before i try it, i would like to know your experiences with webdav.

1. Is it something reliable and will not cause any instability with Laserfiche?

2. If i can access the documents directly, does it mean that it will bypass the rights set on Laserfiche?

3. What happens to metadata and versioning if the documents can be access directly?

4. Are there any other implications of using webdav?

5. Finally, what i wanted to achieve with this is to link one excel to another. With Laserfiche my client cannot link excel to one another directly which is why we are looking into webdav. Is there any other way to do this or is the only option webdav?

Thank You

Regards,

Naheed

I can answer these questions.

  1. WebDAV should not cause instability in Laserfiche. However, it is not reliable as the WebDAV client that ships with Windows has many problems with caching, locking, and session management. Lost edits are the number one observed problem. The performance is unfortunately not very good either due to bugs in session and cookie management. Windows 7 SP1 is the earliest client I would try to use as a WebDAV client with LF.
  2. LFS still mediates all access to documents. Security rights are still enforced, Laserfiche auditing still applies, etc.
  3. Metadata is inaccessible. It's still there but you can't see it from Windows. The Windows WebDAV client is unaware of versioning so LFS will automatically create a new version for every change. Unfortunately this tends to produce a huge number of meaningless versions. To get around this, one can check out a document using the client before editing with WebDAV, and then check it back in when done. However, this workaround requires using the LF client.
  4. Enabling WebDAV support on the server will cause lfs.exe to reserve port 80 for its own exclusive use, precluding running web apps such as Web Access or WebLink on the same host as LFS unless an alternative port is chosen for the web applications.
  5. WebDAV is really your only option at this point to enable embedded document links to function. Laserfiche is investigating alternative solutions for a future version of the product.

Michael,

I have Client that is wanting to implement WebDAV. The only Laserfiche web application on the LFS server is the LFDS.

From what you have indicated above (4), if we implement WebDAV on the LFS server, then we will have to add a different port like 8443 to be able to access LFDS interface. Is this accurate? Also will this impact how other applications connect to LFDS (those connections are typically through port 5048/5049)?

I found a detailed answer from Michael Allen regarding Webdav but dating back august 2014. Is there any update on Webdav using Laserfiche version 10 and did Windows fixed any related issue? One of my customers needs these features ( excel files link, for one)  for an importatnt project.

Thanks for your follow up

Bernard, Did you find any additional information?  I am considering trying it to meet a requirement of an easy save from network source.

Thank you very much for the answers. I have something to work with now. I managed to make Webdav work on a citrix environment today for testing purposes. I will post my experience of it here once i try it some more.

Many thanks again,

Naheed

As a fellow VAR, my recommendation would be that you do not just make this decision without much thought. Doing your research here and discussing with LF Presales members will help if you decide to use WebDAV.

Good Luck with you research.
