Question

Is it possible to place a static folder entry ID in a LF Client toolbar button?

asked on August 19, 2014

Users clicking LF shortcuts to folders in LF Client get their focus changed from the shortcut to the target folder location, which could be in any of several locations, possibly deep down the folder hierarchy. An easy workaround would be to have a toolbar button that returns users in a department to their 'Inbox' location.

I can currently create a custom toolbar button that will respond with the current selected path or current selected folder ID, but what I want to do is not query the current selection, but rather open a specified location (a 'Take Me Home!' button, so to speak).

If I use the Workflow designer naming convention for an entry ID or a path, LF Client throws an error when I click the toolbar. If I drag the LF-Client desired folder location to a Windows desktop, it actually works exactly as desired, but launches a new client window session each time the shortcut is executed.

I'm sure there's probably a simple method I've overlooked for doing this.

Any ideas?

You should be able to configure that custom toolbar icon to open up the LFClient executable with specified parameters, such as that static folder:

EDIT: Realized you were asking for something else

Can this not be done using the "back" button?

I feel like this might be better as a feature request that when opening a document, you are not moved away from the location you access the shortcut from.

You may have better luck using web access if you have it for this, you can just add an icon at the top for bringing them back to their start.

This is really something that if you do not want to open an new window, you would be able to accomplish with Client Automation Tools from the SDK. You would be able to get a hold of the current focus window and set the current windows folder to whatever you specify

Great responses Kenneth - Thank you!

Yes, the simplest solution would be user education to make a few presses of the back button to return where the session began.

And yes, I wish (but only in some situations) that the shortcut to a folder could behave like the shortcut to a document (in the document pane), as it would minimize the need to create as many shortcuts.

And finally, yes, that definitely could be done with CAT, but venturing off core-code solutions always scares me in terms of future safe-ness: It's got to be a worthwhile risk.

So you were very kind and thorough and quick with your replies!

Much appreciated.
