Maximizing volume size

posted on July 29, 2014

Planning to Re-organizing volumes into larger rolling volumes.

We have very large file sizes but not large quantities images.  On average this is around 1,200 images per GB.  So a 500GB volume would have around 600,000 images.  I've seen white papers using 20GB to 500,000 images as a "best practice" example and they say very large volumes can slow access times.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to maxing Volume Size vs Performance with above conditions?

Disk space & Backup are not at issue.  SQL & LF File Server are on different machines.

Thanks

Volume size should not affect performance. File size definitely can (since electronic files have to be downloaded before they can be displayed), but volume sizing has to do with disk space and backups and has no impact on performance. That guideline you mentioned probably had to do with ease of backup, which is a common consideration when planning volumes.
