Question

Character Preference

asked on July 24, 2014

I am using Quick Fields to Zone OCR an area.  My OCR image has 12DEC0124 in it.  (Note the Zero one two four)  I get a return value of 12DECO124 (Note that its an O now).

This fails to match a database query...  Ok just set it to number preference.  No change.

I would think number preference would change just this sort of thing.

Have you tried in the "Advanced options..." settings for that OCR region to change the Character preference? It is the very first option.

Yea thanks for the reply.  That is actually what my question is about.  I did in fact try the number preference an I would think that returning a zero instead of a O would be exactly what number preference would do.  Along with returning 8 instead of B's for example.

However this is not my experience.  Is there a software issue here?  Is it just me?  I have recently upgraded to 9.0 and had this issue both before and after the upgrade.

Thanks in advance.

The character preference setting is slightly misleading because where every other setting is about what the user wants, this one is the OCR engine's preference. The way it works is, if, internally, the engine is not entirely sure if the character is a number or a letter, it will prefer the specified one over the other.

You can try setting a confidence level and specifying that all characters must be above. Then tweak the confidence level to see if you can get OCR to read the character correctly.

Or you can try adding a Smooth as a local image enhancement.

If you can predict that any "O" read in this Zone OCR area should always be a "0" you could also take advantage of Quick Fields' Substitution process to replace any "O" found with a "0."

Thank you for the suggestion.  However my pattern has the month in it DEC for December so during the month of October this would not work.  If there is a way to write a replacement to only replace the O's in the numbered section that would work but I have not got that to work.
