Is there a way to get to the instance ID so I can use it as an identifier?

I have a template that requires a unique identifier and I thought I could use the instance ID but when I look at the default values on a form field that's not an option.  Is there a way to do this or will I need a java script to increment a number by 1?

It is an option when you are configuring fields in the Save to Repository task.

You can use a "Save to Repository" service task in the business process modeler and configure fields to set the instance ID as a value for one of the fields. See this thread for additional information.
