Question

Hyperlinks in PDF's don't work

asked on July 2, 2014

When is it likely that this is going to be resolved?

  • When viewing a PDF in the Folder Browser's Document Preview Pane or the Document Viewer's Electronic File Pane, hyperlinks in the PDF do not work. (94419)

I'm assuming it's some sort of internal architecture change that has caused this as it seemed to appear in version 9.0.0 and has been in every subsequent release note to 9.1.1.

Any info would be much appreciated!

This is still an issue that Adobe has yet to address. We've tested other PDF readers like Foxit. When using the embedded PDF viewer from Foxit in the Client's preview pane or document viewer electronic file pane, hyperlinks from PDFs open fine.

Perhaps as an alternative, you can use Foxit as the default PDF application instead of Adobe.

Ah, now I see the problem; I misread the issue as links to other places within the PDF, not links to external locations. I can reproduce the problem now (thank you for the PDF). Sorry for the confusion.

This was a change to security settings in Adobe (it occurred sometime after version 9.1) which we do not have a  workaround for. It seems to be part of a big security overhaul, and may be why older versions are no longer available for download. We'll update here if we do come up with either a settings workaround in Adobe or a code workaround on our end.

I've spoken with the developers, and this bug is still on their radar. They're hoping to have it fixed in the near future (though I can't give you a timeline).

This issue is actually specific to a version of Adobe Reader (Adobe Reader X), not a version of Laserfiche. The reason it didn't appear in the release notes until version 9 is because Adobe Reader wasn't widely used until sometime after 8.3.2 was released, so it was not yet discovered. I will request that the KB make this information clear.

Using a different version of Adobe Reader (9 or XI) should work, but cannot confirm because I am actually unable to reproduce the issue myself, though it has been confirmed by multiple people. Links in PDFs were definitely confirmed to work with Adobe Reader 7, but that is fairly out of date.

Long story short: this issue does not occur in all situations, and if you do encounter it, try using a Adobe Reader version other than Adobe Reader X.

Hi Brianna,

Just for completeness. I've tested this with Abode Reader X, XI and 9.5 and none of these versions allow LF to open a hyperlink within a PDF. I can't seem to download Adobe Reader 9 (or any versions before 9.5) anymore to test this. Attached is a PDF which you can test with.

Thanks Brianna,

It seems the workaround for now is to right click the document in Laserfiche and click "View Electronic File". It then opens in reader outside Laserfiche and the hyperlinks function normally once again.

I've got a customer that's asking for an update to the hyperlink issue. Has this been resolved without resorting to the "view electronic file" workaround?

As mentioned before, this is due to change to Adobe's security settings that locked down links. They have not responded to our questions about the change, so we do not have any new information on how we might try to implement a workaround. As I said, I will update here if there are any changes.

Has there been an update on the topic? Sorry for the persistence, but this is holding up a large project.

Are there any PDF's on the Atlantis server that have hyperlinks to other in PDF's so that our customer can test out the issue on latest version of LF?

Has there been any update on this? were wanting to upload PDF files which use hyperlinks to take your to particular sections of the PDF you are currently viewing?

Hey Christian, our use case found that it was indeed a problem with a version of Adobe reader. Did you try with Foxit?

Not tried Foxit yet but I will!

Is there not a option to have the PDF once you select it open automatically as the 'Electronic file' version?

We have once again reached out to Adobe to see if they have any response, as this issue is specific to the Adobe reader, for specific reader versions. I have tried a couple different methods of contacting them this time, so perhaps we will get a response.

@Ryan,

Could you explain your screenshot a little more? Is that what I should have selected for my PDF's to automatically open as an electronic file?

Thanks

You'd actually want the next option in the list, open PDF's in the associated application.

Justin,

Will selecting that option open the PDF as an electronic document as default?

Yes, it will open PDFs with your default reader every time.

Ryan, Justin,

Perhaps im missing something here. When I click on a PDF I want the PDF to open as default the way I currently open one and then have to select 'View Electronic File'; it opens in a PDF viewer where i can use the internal links.

When I have done what you have done it has opened a new tab using an Adobe reader, which isn't what I want.

I want to view the PDF in a PDF viewer within the LF repository as default.

See the screen shots of how I get to the PDF Viewer which I want to open as default.

Your help is appreciated.

If you want to open it by default in the Web Access native pdf viewer than you'd set that second option to 'the Laserfiche Document Viewer'. I thought you were saying that it wasn't showing up correctly in that view though?

Justin,

Apologies for going round in circles here. But I dont think we are understanding each other.

I simply want my PDF's to automatically open as the electronic file, as seen in my attachment. Can this be done?

See attached screenshot of a PDF in the PDF Viewer/Electronic File view with yellow highlighted internal links that work. I want this as my default view for PDF's in the repository.

Let me know if I am doing something wrong here or completely misunderstanding.

Hi Christian,

I think there are a couple misunderstandings here. Let's see if I can clarify:

1) It sounds like you cannot open the links from the default view because you are viewing the generated TIFF pages of the document, not the PDF pages in the embedded viewer, which is not related to the issue in this thread.

2) A workaround to the issue described in this thread is to open the document directly in the Adobe PDF viewer, not in the embedded viewer, which is the option that was suggested above by Justin

3) The issue in this thread does not apply to Web Access 10.1 embedded PDF viewer, since that uses different technology to embed the PDF than the desktop client

In your case, it sounds like you want to view the original PDF embedded in the document viewer in Web Access 10.1 for documents that also have TIFF image pages.

At this point, I am not aware of a way to default opening the embedded PDF viewer for documents with both TIFF pages and a PDF electronic file. I'll check in with the Web team to see if there is a way or if it can be added.

If you never need the TIFF pages, you could delete the generated pages and keep only the PDF, and choose not to generate them in the future. You would then go with the second radio button to open the PDF in the document viewer.

Hi Christian,

I'm a QA engineer on the Web Access team. The best way to open the document viewer with the PDF pane loaded by default is to:

1. Right click on the PDF from the folder browser

2. Go to Open->Electronic File

3. Select either View or Edit in the dialog that appears

Currently in Web Access 10.1, there is no setting that loads displays the PDF pane by default when opening the standard way (double click or click on document name). We'll look into adding such an option for a future release.

Ryan,

Those steps you have detailed above are without question the quickest way to open it as a Electronic File, so thank you for the reminder.

From my mind e the ability to open a PDF in this view as default should be available because;

  • The internal links within the PDF actually work as people want them to in the Electronic View option.

  • In the Electronic View there is zero loading time of the pages on my iPad however  I can often wait while the pixels clear and the page loads in the default view of the PDF (TIFF images I believe?).

  • In this view you actually swipe down instead of across? In my mind swiping down is the most user friendly experience among apps and reading on apps and im not sure why they are different? Any explanation?

I would suggest, for the advantages above, consider making this if not the default the ability to make it the default view.

Thanks
