attempting to launch Laserfiche 8.3 sp2 this error message comes up immediately:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxtrace.exe tool for more detail.

There may be some corruption with the WinSxS files on that particular workstation. You can try the following steps and see if it resolves the matter.

  1. Uninstall all of the Laserfiche Client components on the computer
  2. Delete the files listed in https://support.laserfiche.com/KB/1012088
  3. In addition to the files listed there, delete the files that start with x86_Laserfiche.ICU and x86_LFWicUtil as well
  4. Note that this is to be done in C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS, C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\Manifests, and C:\WINDOWS\WinSxs\Policies
  5. Then make sure to delete the C:\Program Files\Laserfiche\Client 8 folder
  6. Once that is done, reboot the machine and reinstall the Client

Thank you for your response.  I was unable to delete any of the suggested files as they required permission from System.  I attempted to take ownership and/or change permissions and was denied at every step.  Reinstalling LF 8.3 without deleting the files did not fix the problem.

You'll need to have a windows user with administrative rights log into the PC to perform the steps.

I tried with both a local administrator user account  and with my domain administrator credentials.  Neither would allow me to delete the files/folders nor change permissions.

What exact error are you getting when trying to delete the files?

You have to be very specific when you take ownership of files in WinSxS. You can do it on a subfolder of it, but you have to specify that you want to replace permissions on all child objects.

Problem resolved by formatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything.  Thanks everyone for your advice.  We could not take any chances with a potential corrupted workstation. Obviously something serious happened to this computer (virus, malware, etc) so extreme measures were taken to secure IT.
