Question

restore 1 image to a document from backup file

asked on June 26, 2014

We are testing our disaster recovery plan and had a question come up.  What if a user deleted then purged 1 page from a document then later discovered that they needed that page the next day.  We have nightly backups and I have the image paths from the other pages in the document.  The missing page is in the volume backup.  My question is how do we get that image back to the document so the user can see the restored image on the client side?

The image shows the 9 pages that are showing up in the client side document properties.  The 10th page is in the backup file.  So how do we restore the 10th page from the backup file to the document in the client side

Hi Kendra,

If this is truly a one-off deal, where there's a single page of a single document, the easiest method is probably just to find the old image from the backups, copy it over to the live installation and then drag/drop the page into the existing document.  You'll be prompted where you want to insert it (before the first page, after the last page, or as a specific page number), and after you hit OK, you'll have your old document back.

I know this is just a theoretical issue rather than an actual problem you're facing, but you may want to consider revoking the purge rights of your users.  By only allowing administrators to empty the recycle bin, you'll significantly reduce the chances of something like this happening.

Thank you Brett!

This answered my question.  We have removed all purge access after such an incident in the past, but since we were looking at the backups and recovery, I just thought I'd ask it.

I'm going to give it a test try with tonight's backup to verify that I can do it.
