Question

Search Annotation Text

asked on June 12, 2014 Show version history

 I came across this when trying to set something up for a department that wanted to be able to search by highlighted text.  In the customize search pane it states under basic search that you can search by annotation text.  This is somewhat misleading since highlight is considered an annotation yet will not pull up results from pages that have highlighted text. Is this by design and if so could you consider adding highlighted text to the basic search annotation text results?

I know it's not quite what you're looking for, but you can narrow your search down a bit by creating a search query that contains the following advanced search syntax:

{LF:AnnType="H"}

This will return only documents that have highlights on them, so combined with a text search, this may help to eliminate some erroneous results.

As for actually searching only through highlighted text, it would definitely be possible to create some sort of SDK utility that accomplishes that, but I don't think it would be a very efficient search, and may require some clever coding to get working.  It's kind of a cool request though, and I can see how that would be useful.  If you can give us a bit more information about your use case (specifically, what are you trying to accomplish and why is this feature necessary), we can pass the request on to the developers.  We get a lot of feature requests, so our development team has to prioritize based on importance, and having a well-documented use case goes a long way towards illustrating the necessity of a request.

Well I developed a workflow for our VA benefits program that creates a packet for a student that continually gets added to as the student turns in their paperwork. The VA reps go through sometimes hundreds of pages in a student's packet and needed a way to quickly identify key information on one of the pages. They could just add a sticky note but they found it quicker to just highlight the information, say a semester/year that they are going to be enrolling in classes. At the time of highlighting the packet is usually incomplete so at some point they will have to refer back to it. But let's say they want to only look through student packets that have this information. They wanted a way to just look through those packets with the semester/year highlighted which could be on any given page throughout the student's packet.

Thanks Ramon!  I've forwarded your request on to the development team.  I can't promise that the feature will be added, but it will definitely be reviewed and considered for inclusion in a future version of Laserfiche.

I believe what is meant by searching annotations are annotations that contain text such as a sticky note, callout, textbox, etc. A highlight itself does not really contain text, the text is already there and is just being selected to be highlighted.

Yes and I understand.  It would still be great to have the ability to search for highlighted text specifically.  I could search for those terms using text search but then the results could potentially be way larger than I want.  Being able to search by highlighted text would narrow down the results significantly. And the inverse of a highlight not really containing text itself is that OCR text is highlighted when you use the annotation on an image so some function of being able to have a search the incorporates text and highlights would help.
