Question

Emailing a document/shortcut with Lotus Notes

asked on June 4, 2014

Hi all,

Right clicking on an entry and selecting Email Document lets the user generate a blank email with the document, or a shortcut to it, attached and ready to send. It's awesome. I've only ever experienced using this myself with Outlook and Exchange, but have been asked if it can be used with Lotus Notes.

During a quick test of this feature, the Lotus user is prompted to configure their email profile. Lotus doesn't use the built-in mail profiles within Windows, so there is no way to progress beyond this step and get the blank email automatically created.

For this feature to work, does the mail client need to make use of the built-in Mail profiles within Windows? (The ones in Control Panel > Mail).

Is the right click > Email Document feature supported for the Lotus Notes mail client (any version)?

Many thanks!

Martin

As a test, if you open Windows explorer then right click on a file and then select "send to mail recipient", what comes up? Does it bring up the Lotus notes mail client?

Thanks for the reply Raymond. Yeah, using Send to > Mail recipient from explorer brings up a blank email in Lotus Notes with the file attached.

I find that the behavior of this is set in Start > All Programs > Default Programs, under the MAPI "Send mail" command. Lotus Notes is set as the default application for sending mail here, but this default doesn't seem to be used by Laserfiche when creating the blank email.

I don't mind making a support case for it if you think that's a better way to progress, but just wanted to know if it's actually a supported action first.

As long as the email client is a MAPI supported application, it should work.  Oftentimes this is a profile issue. Try another windows account on the same machine.

If anyone is having trouble getting their Lotus Notes to work as the email client for Laserfiche- we solved the issue by changing this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail

The default value was 'Microsoft Outlook'.  We changed it to 'Lotus Notes' and had success after that.  We had no luck changing Default Programs settings through the control panel interface- MAPI (and MAILTO, etc.) was set to Lotus Notes and Microsoft Outlook was still opening.

I was having the inverse problem, we had changed from Novell GroupWise to Outlook and Laserfiche kept trying to use the GroupWise profile.

Using this tip I set the default mail client to Microsoft Outlook and it worked, thanks for sending me on the right track of where to look!
