Question

Image Compression

asked on June 3, 2014

I have a couple of customers that need to compress large color and grayscale images (TIFF-LZW). One customer is still on 8.3 and the other is on 9.1. Neither customer has Quick Fields.

Is it possible to use PhotoDocs to reprocess the files and to only compress the files (convert using JPG compression)? Meaning no other action within PhotoDocs would take place, such as converting to b&w or changing the contrast.

Is it possible to use the 8.1 image converter utility when the server is 9.1? I realize the LF client on the workstation running the utility would have to be 8.1. Are there any other issues in using this utility?

You should be able to use the utility from KB 1012616 on a computer with Client 8.1. There shouldn't be any problems with the Server being 9.1.

Alex,

I tried running this utility on a computer running the 9.1.1 client and I get a bunch of .NET exceptions. I get this one when launching:

See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

What are the system requirements to run this? I need to compress a bunch of images and I haven't been able to run this since we moved off of LF 8.

Thanks for the help.

You need the 8.1 Client installed on the computer.

What would it take to update the utility to run using LF 9?

I'd be interested in this to since we can't download the 8.1.1 client anymore.

What can be done to get this to work w/ the LF 9 client?

Can I have the 8.1 or 8.2 client installed on the same computer as the LF 9 client?

I know the KB article says converting grayscale and color, but will the converter work with images that are black and white? It seems that although documents were scanning in as black and white, its size was 5MB for one page. We discovered that it even though Laserfiche Scanning was set to "These settings" we had to go into the "Default scanner software" part and change the settings to black and white there, in order to reduce the size. Then it worked when going back to "These settings." The size for that one page is now 130KB. This is for the Canon M160 and happened at 2 different locations.

I suspect the best way to do this now is to use Import Agent 10.

so far I've had awesome luck with using IA10 to shrink things. It's an extra expense if they don't have Import Agent but it's much cheaper than quick fields.

I used IA 10 on a project last week that took a 10 page 8 meg tif and compressed it to less than 400k.

The color wouldn't matter, just the image compression. If your "black and white"  8.5" by 11"image is 5MB in size, it's most likely still using TIFF LZW compression. You can tell for sure by opening the image in the volume directly with an image viewer like IrfanView and looking at its properties.

Miruna - while we are talking about this. My 10 page document was coming over from a lexmark scanner with LZW compression. Putting it through as a tiff I couldn't see any options to compress it - to compress it I had to scan it in as a PDF then use the generate pages/drop the pdf options to get it to the 400k.

Is there any registry changes anywhere that could force resizing of tifs?

Is the Lexmark scanner a MFP or were you scanning through LFScanning?

We have a school district with a fleet of Lexmarks that do not have hard drives. So when they scan in they do not have any compression or options like blank page removal. In fact, we used workflow to accomplish this. We thought we might need to compress with a script as well but IA 10 took care of that nicely for us.

I was mostly curious if there was a way to force it to re-compress lzw.

Oh, scanning specifies the type of image it wants to the scanner. But if the scanner ignores it, there's no much we can do. The Client would extract images from multi-page TIFFs on import and re-compress them according to the attribute value.

Hi Cynthia,

Yes, you can use PhotoDocs for its JPEG compression capabilities without having to perform any other image processing. You'll simply:

1. Make sure your Options are set to use JPEG compression.

2. Import your images into PhotoDocs and drag them onto the workspace.

3. Save the images into the repository.

I haven't seen photo docs actually shrink any images I passed through it. Does anyone have any evidence that this work?

If so, why wouldn't it work for me?

I see the same behavior

Hi Kelsey.

We will be utilizing the utility in KB 1012616. We will keep PhotoDocs in mind for other projects.

One note for those who are trying to follow the KB article this post refers to:

An installation of Laserfiche 8.1.x  client needs to be installed for the KB article downloaded solution to work. At this time this is not allowed to be downloaded from the support site anymore.  (https://www.laserfiche.com/ChannelWeekly/Article/laserfiche-support-site-clean-up-phasing-out-legacy-packages)   I was informed of this by support during a chat session.

I am running into the same issue, but because it's not available for download (and we haven't found one internally yet) we cannot help implement this solution for our customer.
