Question

Max file size for Laserfiche forms file upload.

asked on May 28, 2014

Is there a max size file you can upload?

I have a Client that wants to upload 10-15gb files using forms.

Possible? Reliable?

Thanks

Hi Nathan,

The maximum size for files uploaded in Forms is 250 MB, as described in the FAQ section of the Forms help files. Even without this limit, however, the concerns Devin described would be valid for uploading files this large to a web application.

Sorry Kelsey, just for clarification:  Do you mean a total of 250MB can be uploaded per submission (i.e. 5 files that are 50MB each) or 250MB per one file (and you can have as many of those as you like)?  Thanks so much!

Hi Shelby,

Each individual file uploaded is limited to 250 MB, but the form itself can have more than 250 MB of content uploaded and submitted with it. You could, for example, upload two 200 MB files in the same file upload field, for a total of 400 MB of content.

In the (almost) six years since this post was written, has this limit been expanded? Large attachments would allow us to use Forms to process approvals for presentation media.

We are looking into make this file limit configurable by system administrators so you can adjust base on your business needs and we recommend to use the file system volume to store the attachments if you want to set the limit to above 2 GB.

Has this limit been updated, I have a client who is getting larger files more frequent and would like to have 1GB provision.

This has been updated with Forms 11 Update 2 (https://support.laserfiche.com/kb/1014352/list-of-changes-for-laserfiche-forms-11-update-2), you can change the maximum file size allowed up to 2047 MB from Configuration site.

With files that large, there are a lot more limitations in play than just what Forms can handle. The browser, IIS, and the server all need to be prepared for what's happening.

Ideally there would be some kind of "chunking" going on to upload individual pieces of the binary stream and enable progress and retry logic.

This is a non-trivial issue with web applications in general, and there are a lot of solutions out there. The question is whether Forms would support what is necessary. Hopefully someone from Laserfiche will weigh in.

One of my clients has now requested the ability to upload files up to 1GB in size through Forms.  I understand the limit is 250MB currently, and I understand some of the challenges of IIS handling larger files, however we have been able to use custom web pages to accept files this large.  Is there any plan to increase this limit with Forms, or is there any type of suggested workaround for this limitation?

What type of files need to be uploaded? What type of process is it? Can you share more about the detailed use case?

Construction company with PDF's of bldg plans. They have a number of layer and average 10-20-30mb.

Long story short is they have a hard time getting the documents passed around. there email kicks them back due to the large size. I'm trying to figure a way. My first though was using forms for getting the PDF's to her.

Is there a typo in your original post? It says that you need to pass around several gigabyte files, and now you're talking about several megabytes. the 10-30Mb range actually shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Hi there,

Forms use SQL to store the file. So a large size file will cause large size of SQL database. So it's not recommended to upload large size file.

Hi

One question about this:

Someone knows how many lines is the maximum of attachments can get into one single attachment button?

Regardless of weight

Or if you do not have the exact figure, which was the maximum number that someone has managed to upload on a single button.

Regards.

I know the maximum attachment size per attachment is 250 MB, and as far as my experience, there doesn't seem to be a limitation on the number of attachments.

I have personally tested submitting a Form with 100 attached files on a single attachment button, and there weren't any issues.
