Question

How can I display a message to the user during a workflow?

asked on May 22, 2014

Tried MsgBox in Vb.Net, but that did not work. Is there a different method to use to display a message to the user that started a workflow process?

No, because Workflow runs on a server and any message boxes you have on the script would be popping up on the server (where most likely nobody is actually logged into a user session). Workflow can notify users through email or through the user of business processes.

Would it be possible to get this added to future versions of Work Flow? I could see using the normal MsgBox the way it is currently and then have an optional Initiator or something like that to specify. If the connection on the server was still open, then it could send the message and let them know... otherwise it could drop the message.

Windows does not support remote messaging in modern operating systems, so any messaging system to LF users would have to go through the Laserfiche Server. I'll log the request, but we do not currently have plans for implementing one.

How would one notify the user through the user of business processes? The link did not seem to indicate.

If the user starts the business process directly from the Client or Web Access, a message about it is displayed. If the workflow/business process starts based on a starting rule, then the only way to notify the user is through email.

Or, embed the information in the "instructions" section of the business process step. Granted, the user will have to open the document to find the instructions, but that's another way to provide a message without adding more emails to their inbox.

How do you do this? I don't see an option for Workflow to start a business process, it requires the user start the business process so the instructions would never actually update.

Would you be able to send any other messages with that? If so how? I do realize that it does have a start message box that pops up and an ending message box that finishes. However in the section there is a conditional decision that is made and if it goes down one decision path, would like to let the user know other than email.

There actually is no message box at the end. You can use business process step activities to record information at various stages in the workflow. This information would be displayed in the business process details in the Client and Web Access. However, the user would not be automatically notified when those details update, they would have to open the document and open the Business Process Details dialog.

If a document would need attention from the user based on a conditional decision, you could drop a shortcut to the entry in a folder for that purpose, like a "Needs Attention" inbox/folder.

Thanks...

I was given a link, https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/53515/windows-pop-up-alert-through-Laserfiche-workflow, that indicates there are other ways to do this. Will try and see about those options.
