Metadata Tokens Displaying in MS Word

asked on May 16, 2014

I'm looking to have a MS Word doc pre-populate with metadata tokens via workflow.  Here are the steps I'm going through to make this happen.

  • Find the blank template by ID (NOTE: the MS Word doc is already configured to have the metadata field token values where I need them to be displayed)
  • Copy the found doc
  • Assign Metadata

Currently, when I assign metadata to the MS Word Doc in Laserfiche, then open the MS Word Doc. I have to click the Laserfiche Ribbon (inside MS Word) and select "REFRESH" to get the information to appear.  Is there a way to make it automatically appear?

Thanks in advance,

Nate

Hey Nate:

Can we see some properties of the workflow activities? I would like to see a bit more information in regards to the activities.

Can you explain how you did this:

Thanks

Rebecca,

This is something that you set up in your MS Word template using the Laserfiche Ribbon.  The concept is very similar to filling out a PDF.  If you have any  trouble feel free to email me at nbarker@gflesch.com.

Hi Nathan,

As far as I know this isn't possible and has to be a manual process. The assign metadata option you are seeing in WF will only update the LF metadata, not the token input inside the word document. For this you will need to click the update button as you mentioned.

I'm not even sure this could be scripted as your are technically interacting with MS Office and that is pretty locked down when it comes to integration.

My only suggestion at this point would be to raise this as a feature request.

Cheers!

I agree with Nathan.

We created a workflow that takes a copy of a Word template (a cover letter), assigns meta-data to the copy, renames it and move it to a new folder.  It would be great if the fields could be automatically populated.

In our use case, however, the Word document requires a review before sending anyway, so it is a simple matter to include the "refresh" task as a manual process.

I love this feature, and I appreciate that the number of tokens that can be used was substantially expanded in the most recently release.  Thank you!

Hi Franz,

Can you tell me how are you assigning the metadata to the word doc in the workflow.

I have a 13 page word doc (a contract) which needs to be filled in with the details obtained from the customer which has a template assigned to it and saved in the repository.

Thanks!
