Question

Weblink image display option: Color - Grayscale - B&W

asked on May 16, 2014

Hello,

if I'm not mistaken, there used to be an option in old versions of Weblink, for users to choose whether to display an image in Color, Grayscale or Black&White.

I'm looking this option in Weblink 8, but can't find it. But maybe I'm wrong...

Thank you and best regards,

Monochrome images are now always displayed in grayscale.  The quality of a downsampled image presented in black and white is necessarily not very good (as you can see in Wes's link), but we had the option available at the time due to the lower bandwidth and processing requirements.

"but we had the option available at the time due to the lower bandwidth and processing requirements". While I understand the processing requirements have decreased over time I do feel though that the need to be able to down sample along with decreasing the color palette has not with the increase in mobile device usage.

For instance this https://www.cityofaikensc.gov/WebLink8/PageImageData.aspx?scale=3897&dID=44859&pageNum=1&ann=1&r=yBg3h18V&search=

(I don't need to have this page image in full color unless I am printing it or it contains color coded data, etc).

If I am browsing on my phone with only a 3G or LTE connection I would much rather have this as grayscale or even better monochrome until I find the information I am looking for. At that point then I would request the page in color (if it required). Not only would this save processing time on the server but more importantly I would save bandwidth that is costing me.

You are not mistaken as you can clearly see the options are there in 7.0.5 at https://www.herndon-va.gov/Weblink7/DocView.aspx?id=18440&dbid=0

Thanks Wes and Brian, really appreciated!

So, the option is not available in Webling 8 any more? Also not through web page configuration?

Even if I agree that it is not a real benefit nowadays, sometimes we need this kind of options to reply to 10,000,000 questions' tenders indecision

Best,

Ignacio

Can you expand on why you need this?

Hi Brian,

As I said below, it was just because I'm replying to a RFP where this feature is requested, and I remembered that we used to have something like that. Maybe it is something useful, specialy for browsing large documents through Web. But honestly my question was fully addressed to that specific question of the Tender.

Thank you for your interest and best regards,

Ignacio,

There are no configuration settings to turn this back on and also I believe it was completely removed from the code base. Now it is possible through JavaScript, CSS and HTML to implement this back in along with the rotation button (it was in 7 as well).
